Anubis is the Egyptian god of mummification and the underworld. He is often presented as having the head of a jackal. He would judge the souls of the dead by weighing their hearts on a scale, with the feather of Ma'at on the other end. If the heart was heavier (which indicated sin), the dead was fed to Ammit. If the feather was heavier, the dead were free to pass into the afterlife.
